Definitions & Terminology

Agreement Form: This form is required for new labmembers who are from outside Stanford. This document defines the limits and liabilities in the relationship between SNF and the non-Stanford organization.
Cap: Lab use fees are charged by equipment use time, up to the cap level, which is the maximum equipment charge (by time) that can be accrued in a given calendar month.
CIS: Center for Integrated Systems. This is the industrial affiliates program supporting research in integrated hard- and soft-ware systems. The CIS program supports many Stanford researchers at SNF, and promotes new academic researchers (both Stanford and non-Stanford -- see the CIS Grant below) at SNF.
CIS Grant Form: The CIS generously supports a grant program to encourage new researchers to join the lab. New labmembers from academic institutions are eligible.
CORAL:
Equipment Use Fee: This category of fees is charged against the amount of time equipment is used.
Fees: This link describes the SNF fee policy.
Government/Industrial Category: The administration of fees and some policies is dependent on Labmember Category.
Information Form: To gain access to SNF, prospective labmembers need to fill out this form. It provides us with your contact informationand also statistical information which we need to report annually.
L
abmember: Any part of the community of researchers who use and support SNF.
Labmember Category: Certain administrative policies, primarily fee structures, are applied depending on the labmembers user category.
Lab Orientation and Safety Training: This is a half-day class required of all new labmembers, before they are allowed access to the lab.
NNIN: The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded network of University Facilities, of which Stanford is a founding member.
On-Site Lab Use: Most labmembers choose to work on-site; however, some projects (or, indeed, some parts of projects) may be better served by our remote use policy.
Outside Academic Category: Labmember Category applying to any non-Stanford, non-SLAC researcher who is primarily employed by a not-for-profit educational institution.
Overhead Fee: Overhead is charged by Stanford University on research contracts.
PI: Principal Investigator. This is the main contact person for your project. In order to qualify for a CIS grant, the PI must be a member of the faculty senate of an established academic institution.
Process Staff Support Fee: Use of process staff for training, processing of wafers, and other consultation may be subject to this fee.
Project Proposal Form: Every labmember should have one or more project proposal forms on file. This is for our project database, by which SNF can track the number and types of research projects using the Facility.
Remote Lab Use: As an alternative to doing work on-site, some projects may be amenable to processing by our staff.
SNF: The Stanford Nanofabrication Facility.
Stanford (Labmember Category): Labmembers who are affiliated with Stanford or SLAC.
Stockroom: All labmembers have access to the lab Stockroom, which provides many of the basic expendables needed for doing work in the cleanroom.
Technical Liaisons: Staff members who can help labmembers with advice on available resources.
