Labmember Categories

Your Labmember category is determined by how your organization is classified and will set the overhead rate, and therefore, the fee rate you will be charged, as well as options for billing accounts. If you are with Stanford or Outside Academic institution, you may be eligible for a CIS User/Bio Grant. If you are with an industrial organization supported by funding from an SBIR program, your project may be eligble for the special SBIR rate. The specific paperwork and information required for access to SNF will depend on your LabMember category as well as the previous history of your organization with SNF; for a summary table of information required, click <here>.

The three LabMember categories are defined as follows:

Stanford University and Affiliates: Stanford-affiliated professors, staff, students, research assistants, post-docs, visiting scholars, etc. (basically anyone who is employed by or has an appointment at Stanford University or the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.) In order to be in this category, the Stanford-based LabMember must be doing academic research. Lab time accrued by Stanford University and Affiliate Labmembers doing research/development work for an industrial organization outside of a collaboration or other formal academic research endeavor will be charged at industrial rates. SNF fees are quoted here as direct cost, since the standard overhead is subtracted by Stanford University in its administration of research contracts.

Other Academic: Professors, staff, students, research assistants, post-docs, visiting scholars, etc. employed or having an appointment at a non-Stanford University academic institution. LabMembers in this category must be performing academic research; industrial research activities outside of normal collaborative research will be charged at industrial rates.

Government/Industry: Any non-academic organizations, including National Labs. Companies supported by a recognized SBIR program may define specific projects within SNF which are eligible for the discounted, special SBIR rate. Documentation of the SBIR award will be required.
